According to an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data conducted by the American Transportation Research Institute, in 2023, 41.4% of truck drivers live in states where recreational marijuana use is legal, up from 18.5% in 2019.
Perhaps more concerning, ATRI also reported that of the 2000 drivers who responded to a recent survey, 19.1% were unsure if an interstate truck driver could use marijuana while off-duty in states where it is legal. More alarmingly, 6.6% were sure they could.
