Transport Topics recently asked STC President Dave Osiecki to comment on the rise of obstructive sleep apnea among truck drivers and how it should be addressed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The story was an outgrowth of a recent conclusion by the National Transportation Safety Board that a fatal 2018 crash was, in part, the result of the lack of a “robust medical certification evaluation process” which failed to identify a driver with untreated obstructive sleep apnea who caused a several vehicle pile-up after becoming fatigued on the job.
